Holiday Saving How-To Guide

First, low-cost subscriptions are great ways to give, and then give again, and sometimes again after that.

"For as little as $10, you can get a year's subscription to many great magazines," an InCharge holiday shopping survey said. "For the movie lover, how about a one- or two-month subscription to a DVD rental service, movie passes or gift certificates to a local movie rental store?"

Some of the greatest gifts are made, not bought. Photographing or videotaping holiday gatherings -- of both friend and family -- and presenting photo albums or homemade DVDs are gifts that will be cherished long after the holidays pass, InCharge said.

In that same vein, homemade holiday treats are an exceptional way to add your personal touch while sharing the wealth.

"Awaken your inner baker and make a large batch of holiday cookies, fudge or homemade jam to split between school teachers, baby sitters and neighbors," the survey suggested.

Using a car might have been better...

A bank robbery suspect was arrested while waiting at a bus stop to make her getaway, police said. Channel Monae Gaskin, 22, was arrested Wednesday after a police officer saw her waiting for a bus and matched her to the description of the robbery suspect. She has been charged with robbery.

"That just wasn't too bright," Sandy Springs police Lt. Steve Rose said of the escape plan.

A woman went into a bank shortly after 1 p.m. Wednesday and demanded money, police said. She did not show a weapon.

After being given a bag of cash, she ran across a parking lot to a restaurant, where a dye bomb exploded and sprayed orange-colored ink on her and the money, police said.

She left the restaurant and then tried to stash the dye-stained clothes and money in a bathroom at a nearby grocery store, Rose said.

Portsmouth close to clinching Milan Baros signing

Harry Redknapp, the Portsmouth manager, is close to completing the loan signing of former Liverpool and Aston Villa striker Milan Baros on loan from French champions Lyons.

The Czech Republic international, who has struggled to hold down a regular place with the French side, is unlikely to be cleared in time for Saturday’s fourth round FA Cup tie at home to Plymouth Argyle, but should be available for next Wednesday’s trip to Manchester United, the Premier League leaders.

Redknapp, who last week bought Lassana Diarra, the France midfielder, from Arsenal for £5 million, financing the move by selling the versatile Matt Taylor to Bolton Wanderers, is ready to dip into the French market again having loaned left-back Lucien Aubey from Lens.

The loan signing of Baros could become a permanent move at the end of the season.
