| E for All's Into the Pixel features video game art
While the main focus of this week's E for All Expo in Los Angeles is to let gamers get their hands on hot new console and PC games, there's a different exhibit on the show floor that appeals to art fans. Called Into the Pixel, the exhibit features fine art created by artists who work in game design. Into the Pixel — an annual fixture at past E3 Expo events — is here at E for All, featuring 16 inductees selected by a panel of jurors. It's already been shown at the E3 Media & Business Summit in Santa Monica earlier this year as well as the Toronto International Film Festival. The artwork runs the gamut from Half-Life 2 Episode 2 to 300: March to Glory, Rayman's Raving Rabbids to EVE Online. For the most part, these aren't screenshots — this is fine art created by the same game designers who create the environments and characters that populate popular video games.
If You Are Drowning In Remote Controls, Harmony Is Lifesaver
Our love affair with entertainment gadgets has caused an unfortunate epidemic of remote controls. In my own house, there's a wicker basket on a coffee table with a jumble of remotes for a television set, a high-definition television tuner, a home-theater receiver and a couple of videogame consoles. And when that basket became flooded, I added yet another device to contain the clutter. There are "universal" remotes that are designed to let you operate multiple electronics devices from a single control. But most universal remotes, if you can figure out how to work them at all, don't help much with the tedious sequence of button pushes often required to do simple tasks, like watch a movie. In my case, just turning on the TV can require up to six punches on two different remotes, depending on what activity I happened to be doing on my home-theater system the last time I shut it off.
Radio & TV Talk
I want to see what a videocamera does to that. The last word: That dour wife, Ginny. Fake smile. Halfhearted handshake. Bored demeanor. Where's the love, girl? What were the designers' problems this week? How could so many talented people flub the fit and such a basic design?
