Residents upset over breakdowns of elevators

A smaller elevator was shut down in August and a larger one was shut down voluntarily last Thursday when it failed a weight load test.

The elevator didn't break, City Fire Marshal Doug Bennyhoff stressed, but sagged some when a sample weight was placed on it.

Since then Eagles Manor employees have been carrying meals to upper-floor residents who couldn't walk to the main floor dining room. Some residents complained of cold meals, but Eagles Manor officials say they were kept warm in Styrofoam boxes.

Becky Fleming-Siebenaler, chief of the state's health care licensing bureau, said Bill Holliday, administrator of the Eagles Manor facility, told her it could be March before Eagles Manor gets the parts and work crew to repair the larger elevator.

"My feeling is that Holliday has a pretty good handle on the situation and is doing what he can," she said, adding that she sent two state officials to check.
