finkle is einhorn

It's that time of year, when our desires for self-improvement once again rear their ugly head. As a consistent excercise in failure, the New Year's resolutions still manage to comeback every year, like Julio Franco or Michael Vick's herpes. It's what I would commonly refer to as the triumph of hope over experience. That being said, I have some resolutions for those of us that work so hard to bring in the sports news and coverage for which we yearn as well as those who lap it up like a crack addict during a "night of no regrets" in Amsterdam - namely the sports media and fans. SPORTS MEDIA AND FANS TOP RESOLUTIONS FOR 2008. I, as a member of the sports media and/or sports fan, will at least give passing thought to: MEDIA 1. resisting from referring to any white wide receiver as "a great route runner," "sure-handed," or "scrappy." Flashback to my last blog, I will also refrain from referring to any athlete who is a dyed-in-the-wool a hole as being a "fierce competitor." 2.

Homecoming tradition a blend of the zany and the bittersweet

At high schools across the area, it's the season where for one week, each day has a theme. Nerd day or hippie day or days dedicated to school spirit, where even nonathletes wear jerseys and school colors and black football smudges under their eyes.

It's when donning a Batman mask, a witch's hat or a velvet, Harry Potter-esque cape is not only acceptable, but encouraged. It's when long school hallways are papered like giant Christmas presents, covered with banners and signs boasting school spirit.

“I think it's a time to celebrate and remember that high school is the best years of our life," explained Michael Bowdel, a 15-year-old Patrick Henry sophomore in the school's ROTC. “We only have one chance to be in high school, and once we're out, we're into the real world."

From new freshmen in the marching band to seniors on the starting lineup of the football team, homecoming is about being part of one's school.

Johnson, who works out of his Lewisburg home for the Cleveland-based Parts Associates Inc., says Sinks Grove is a popular haunt for his family when the hunting season comes in each fall. While venison is popular in his household, the family isn't sure if it will be part of Thursday's menu."If not Thanksgiving, shortly thereafter," he said.Johnson said his son recently completed the hunter safety course administered by the Division of Natural Resources for young hunters."He's my athlete," he said.Young Colby looked forward to seeing his story appear in The Register-Herald and not solely because it will be an addition to his scrapbook."I'll take the paper to school," the fourth-grader said, arming himself to checkmate any would-be skeptics at Lewisburg Elementary School."Now, if you don't believe me, here's proof."Mannix Porterfield writes for The Register-Herald in Beckley, W.Va.
