A group that promotes the Confederate flag is airing radio ads in South Carolina that praise Mike Huckabee and criticize John McCain and Mitt Romney for voicing objections to the flag. "Gov. Huckabee understands that all the average guy with a Confederate flag on his pickup truck is saying is he's proud to be a Southerner," proclaims the ad, paid for by Americans for the Preservation of American Culture. Huckabee said Thursday that government should stay out of disputes over the flag, seen by some as a symbol of racism. .

Music industry steps up search for digital revenue
The federation, and other industry groups, are also lobbying the U.S. government to grant artists a "performance right" for music played on American radio stations. A bill currently in Congress would require broadcasters to pay royalties to musicians when radio stations play their works, something they have long had to do in Europe, for instance. "The United States is almost like a policeman in some of these areas, going around the world and saying, 'Why don't you protect intellectual property rights,' " Kennedy said. "And yet it doesn't have a broadcast right. It's an anachronism, really." The United States has been in the lead in the development of digital music, however, with online and mobile distribution accounting for 30 percent of recorded music sales last year.
